Campiglio Dolomiti di Brenta, Italy

Madonna Di Campiglio

Chic Italian Dolomites resort: sunny, groomed cruising and stylish strolls

Madonna di Campiglio is one of Italy's smartest ski resorts. It sits at 1,550 m in a wooded bowl below the jagged Brenta Dolomites, and lifts leave from several points around the town. The local slopes are mostly well-groomed blues and reds, and one lift pass also covers Pinzolo and Folgarida-Marilleva, giving about 150 km of linked pistes. That makes it a strong pick for intermediates, families and anyone who wants good food and a pretty town as much as hard skiing. The downsides: it's pricey, busy at weekends and in Italian holiday weeks, and it doesn't offer much for experts. Three of our hotels are in Pinzolo, a separate, cheaper town about 15 km down the valley. Pinzolo connects to the same lift network by a long gondola.

For your group

Beginners 4/5

There are good nursery areas, several big ski schools with English-speaking instructors and plenty of easy blues, such as on Pradalago and around Campo Carlo Magno. The snow-making means beginners usually have something to learn on. The catch is that the nursery slopes are spread around the area rather than in one central spot, so check how far your hotel is from your ski school's meeting point.

Intermediates 5/5

This is what the resort does best. The Spinale, Pradalago, Grostè and 5 Laghi sectors have wide, groomed reds and blues. You can also ski across to Folgarida-Marilleva, or take the gondola down to Pinzolo, on the same Skiarea pass (about 150 km in total). It's ideal for a full week of varied cruising.

Experts 3/5

There are some proper blacks: the steep Canalone Miramonti (where World Cup slalom races are held), Spinale Direttissima and runs from 5 Laghi. But the lift-served off-piste is limited by national-park rules, and strong skiers may run out of new terrain within a few days. Ski touring with a guide is possible.

Other scores

Snowboarders 4/5

Most lifts are gondolas, cable cars and chairlifts, with very few drag lifts. Ursus Snowpark on Grostè is one of Italy's best-known terrain parks. Some links between sectors and a few valley paths are flat, which is awkward on a board.

Non-skiers 4/5

The car-free centre is attractive for strolling, with smart shops and cafés. There's ice skating, winter walking and snowshoe trails, cross-country trails at Campo Carlo Magno, hotel spas, and gondola rides up to mountain restaurants. The Habsburg (Sissi) carnival is held in February.

Families 5/5

It's popular with Italian families. There are lots of ski schools with kids' clubs and gentle slopes, and it feels safe. Children born 2019–2023 get a free lift pass when an accompanying adult buys a full-price adult pass for the same days (one child per adult; ID needed). One downside: busy Italian school-holiday weeks.

Après-ski 3/5

Après here is lively but stylish: aperitivo bars on the slopes and in town, a buzzing early-evening passeggiata (evening stroll), and a couple of late bars and clubs. Expect Aperol and good wine rather than table-dancing. Prices are high.

Snow reliability 4/5

The town is at 1,550 m and the slopes reach about 2,500 m at Grostè, whose higher, more north-west-facing runs keep their snow best. Most of the pistes have snow-making (reported at around 90–95%), which keeps runs open in dry spells. Late January to mid-March is the most reliable time. Early December and late March to April can be patchy lower down, especially on the runs down to Pinzolo and Folgarida.

Insider tips

  • Avoid Italian peak weeks (28 Dec – 6 Jan and 7–20 Feb 2027) if you can: slopes are busiest and passes cost the most
  • Book a hotel close to the lift your ski school uses. In Campiglio, location matters more than star rating
  • Pinzolo is cheaper than Campiglio. Allow about 20–25 minutes on the gondola each way to reach Campiglio's slopes
  • Ski on weekdays and head to Grostè early for the best snow
  • Bring ID for children to get reduced or free lift passes
  • Buy lift passes online early; the earlier you buy, the cheaper they usually are

Worth knowing

  • Expensive town for eating, drinking and shopping
  • Busy at weekends and in Italian holidays (Christmas–New Year, February), and you pay peak lift-pass prices then
  • Lifts start from several different spots, so some hotels need a walk or ski bus to reach them
  • Limited challenge for experts
  • Pinzolo hotels (Canada, Pinzolo Dolomiti, Beverly Alps) are about 15 km away; you reach Campiglio's slopes by a long gondola (Pinzolo–Campiglio Express), not on foot
  • Après is more stylish than rowdy
  • Transfers take around 2–2.5 hours from Verona and longer from Bergamo or Milan
  • An extra €10 per adult is charged on 3–6 day passes that include a Sunday
