Hotel Les Brevieres Tignes Resort

Tignes - Val d'Isère, France

Tignes

High, snow-sure and huge: a ski factory at 2,100m linked to Val d'Isère

Tignes is a high-altitude resort made up of several separate villages, mainly Tignes le Lac, Le Lavachet and Val Claret at about 2,100m, with smaller, lower villages at Tignes 1800 and Les Brévières. It shares a lift pass and roughly 300km of linked pistes with Val d'Isère, and it has a glacier (the Grande Motte), so it has some of the most reliable snow in the Alps from late November to early May. Keen intermediates, experts and snowboarders love it for the sheer amount of terrain and how long the season runs. The trade-offs: the main villages are mostly 1960s–70s concrete buildings above the treeline, so they can feel bleak, especially in poor visibility, and it's expensive and a long transfer.

Beginners 4/5

Good for complete beginners: the official site lists free beginner lifts in Val Claret, Tignes le Lac and Tignes 1800, right by the accommodation, and at this height the nursery slopes have reliable snow. There are lots of ski schools, including ESF and English-speaking schools. The downsides are that the area above the treeline gives very little visibility when it's cloudy, it can be bitterly cold midwinter, and the step up from the nursery area to the wider mountain can feel big for nervous skiers. Most of the 300km of pistes is aimed at intermediates and above.

Intermediates 5/5

Excellent. The linked Tignes–Val d'Isère area (about 300km in total) has a huge amount of blue and red cruising, mainly on wide, high, open slopes around Tovière, Palet/Aiguille Percée and the Grande Motte glacier. Confident skiers can do a full day trip to Val d'Isère on the same pass, but check the weather and the time of the last lift home. The Double M run from the glacier down to Val Claret has about 1,400m of vertical drop.

Experts 5/5

World-class. There are steep blacks such as the Face-style runs and Sache down to Les Brévières, a big glacier, and a huge amount of famous off-piste, with even more in Val d'Isère. Off-piste is avalanche terrain, so book a qualified mountain guide and take proper safety kit.

Other scores

Snowboarders 5/5

One of Europe's best resorts for snowboarders and freeskiers. Tignes was the freestyle venue for the 1992 Olympics, the terrain park is well kept, and there's lots of freeride terrain. The lifts are mostly chairs, gondolas and the underground funicular, but there are some flat linking sections. Watch out for these between sectors and around Val Claret.

Non-skiers 3/5

Better than many high resorts. There's the Le Lagon aquatic and wellness centre in Le Lac, walking and snowshoe trails, dog-sledding, ice activities on the frozen lake, and non-skiers can buy a pedestrian lift pass to meet friends for lunch on the mountain. The setting is above the treeline and the villages are modern rather than charming, so it's not ideal for a relaxing non-ski week.

Families 4/5

Strong for families. Lift passes are free for children under 8 and charged at the child rate up to and including age 18. There are free beginner areas by the accommodation, lots of ski schools and kids' clubs, and plenty of ski-in/ski-out lodging. The downsides for young children are the cold, the exposed slopes and the walking or shuttle buses between villages. Book childcare and lessons early for school holidays.

Après-ski 4/5

Lively, with a young, sporty and seasonaire crowd. There are après bars at the foot of the slopes in Le Lac and Val Claret, and late bars and clubs in both. It's less glitzy than Val d'Isère's famous slope-side party bar, but there's plenty going on all week. Le Lavachet and the lower villages are much quieter.

Snow reliability 5/5

One of the most snow-sure resorts in Europe. The main villages are at about 2,100m, the lifts go up to 3,456m on the Grande Motte glacier, and there's snowmaking on key runs. For 2026/27 the Tignes area opens gradually from 21 November 2026, the link with Val d'Isère from 28 November, and both close on 2 May 2027 (all subject to snow). December and January can be very cold, and February to March is usually the best time to go. In late April the low run down to Les Brévières (1,550m) can be slushy or closed, but the higher runs stay good.

Scores and notes are our own research from 23 October 2026, not customer reviews. Tap a score to see why. Snow reliability is about the resort in general, not a forecast for your week. Sources: en.tignes.net, public.tignes.net, en.tignes.net, en.tignes.net.

Insider tips

  • Check whether a hotel is in Le Lac, Lavachet or Val Claret. They're about 5 minutes apart by free shuttle bus but feel quite different: Le Lac is the most central, and Val Claret is nearest the glacier.
  • On cloudy, flat-light days, head down to the tree-lined runs towards Les Brévières and Tignes 1800, or ski the Val d'Isère side for better visibility.
  • Children under 8 ski free, but you still need to collect their pass with proof of age.
  • Buy passes online in advance to skip the ticket-office queues on the first Sunday.
  • If you're going over to Val d'Isère, check the last lift times back. Missing them means an expensive taxi.
  • Pack proper cold-weather gear (a neck warmer and goggles for flat light) for December and January.

Worth knowing

  • Main villages are functional and modern, not pretty or traditional
  • Almost entirely above the treeline: flat light and wind can make skiing hard or close lifts on stormy days
  • Long transfer from Geneva (typically 3 to 3.5 hours by shared coach, more on busy Saturdays)
  • Expensive: the 6-day adult Tignes–Val d'Isère pass is €468 for 2026/27
  • Can be very cold in December and January at this altitude
  • Easy runs back to the villages can get crowded at the end of the day, and some are steeper than beginners expect
  • The villages are spread out, so check which part your hotel is in (Le Lac, Lavachet or Val Claret)
