How do I use the different types of ski chairlift?

Published 18 January 2023

Skiing can be an exhilarating experience, but before you can experience the slopes, you need to get to the top of the mountain. One of the most common ways to reach the summit is the chairlift. Chairlifts are a type of aerial lift used to transport skiers to the peak of a mountain or hillside. In large ski resorts, there may be several different types of chairlifts to choose from. Understanding how to use these different chairlifts will help you get the most out of your skiing experience.

The two main types of ski chairlift are detachable chairlifts and fixed-grip chairlifts. Detachable chairlifts are more common in modern ski resorts and use a cable-driven system to move skiers up the mountain. These chairlifts can typically transport skiers up the mountain at a higher speed than regular fixed-grip chairlifts. When using detachable chairlifts, skiers should be aware that the chair may suddenly speed up or slow down.

When riding a detachable chairlift, you will sit in the seat and wait for it to slow down or stop before boarding. It is important to grab onto the handlebars located at the sides of the chair for stability. Before the chair lifts off, make sure that your skis or snowboard are securely attached to your boots. As the chair approaches the unloading station, you will be instructed to move your legs and pole straps away before disembarking.

Fixed-grip chairlifts are the more traditional type of ski lift, which use a continuous cable loop driven by two large bullwheels at the top and bottom of the lift. These lifts tend to operate more slowly than detachable chairlifts, and skiers must board the chairlift manually by stepping into the seat before it lifts off. As the chair moves, skiers should always hold the safety bar and stay inside the chair while the lift is moving, ensuring that their skis or snowboards are securely attached.

When it comes to disembarking from a fixed-grip chairlift, skiers will need to time their jump at the unloading station in order to avoid being tossed off the lift. It is important to remember that these chairlifts usually move more slowly than detachable chairlifts, so skiers should ensure that they jump at the right moment before the chair carries them past the exit.

Overall, chairlifts are an essential part of skiing and are a great way to get to the top of a mountain quickly and safely. Understanding how to use the different types of lifts is key to any successful skiing experience, so be sure to take the time to familiarize yourself with the different types and how they operate before hitting the slopes.
