How do ski lift passes work?

Published 15 January 2023

Ski lift passes provide skiers with access to the ski slopes and can be a convenient and cost-effective method of getting through the ski season. But how exactly do these passes work? Here’s a look at the different types of ski lift passes, the process of purchasing or obtaining a pass, and what they cover while you’re on the slopes.

There are three main types of ski lift passes available: day passes, multi-day passes, and lift season passes.

  • Day passes provide access to the ski slopes for one day and must be purchased in person at the ski resort.
  • Multi-day passes are valid for a specific number of days, anywhere from two to seven days, and are more cost-effective than day passes. Most ski resorts offer discounts for purchasing multiple-day passes in advance.
  • Lift season passes provide unlimited access to the ski slopes for the entire season. These passes are more expensive, but tend to be the most cost-effective for avid skiers and snowboarders who will be going to the ski resort multiple times throughout the season.

Snowglobe can arrange a lift pass as part of your booking. Otherwise, to purchase a day pass, you’ll need to find the ticket office at the ski resort. For multi-day and season passes, you will likely need to buy your pass online and pick it up at the ticket office.

Once you have your ski lift pass, you’ll need to show it each time you want to access the ski slopes. Ski lift passes usually include access to the chairlifts and gondolas that take skiers up the mountain. Depending on the ski resort, the lift pass may also include access to other amenities such as ski schools, equipment rentals, snowshoe trails, and even apres ski activities. Generally, lift passes do not include access to special activities, such as dogsledding or snow tubing, but you may be able to purchase these activities separately.

Ski lift passes are a convenient and cost-effective way to access the ski slopes. Knowing what type of ski lift pass to purchase, how to obtain a pass, and what is included in the pass can help make your ski season more enjoyable.
