What do I need to bring on a ski holiday?

Published 20 January 2023

Going on a ski holiday is an exhilarating and rewarding experience, and ensuring you bring the right items is key to having a successful trip. A few days out in the mountains, skiing or snowboarding away the afternoon requires some special (and sometimes expensive) equipment and apparel that isn’t normally necessary while on vacation. Having the right items prepared can make all the difference in having an enjoyable, comfortable ski holiday.

First and foremost, you’ll need to make sure you bring appropriate winter clothing and outerwear to keep you warm. If you don’t own a winter coat or snow pants, buying some specifically for the trip is a good idea. Layering is key; a breathable base layer and at least one warm insulating layer should be worn beneath the waterproof snow gear. Accessories such as a cozy wool hat, gloves, and scarf are also essential for staying warm and protected from the elements.

Ski gear such as skis or a snowboard, boots and bindings, and poles are essential for most ski holidays. If you don’t have your own gear, you can rent some from the resort – Snowglobe can arrange this for you as part of your booking. If you do own your own equipment, you may want to consider purchasing a durable ski bag to protect your gear while in transit. Considering the cost of some gear, proper maintenance and storage is essential to prevent damage.

Protective gear is also important. Things like a helmet, goggles, and wrist guards are important to keep you safe while on the slopes. While helmets and goggles are traditionally sold together, boots, bindings, and poles are usually sold individually. Take the time to triple-check everything before you hit the slopes, as one wrong connection or misplaced part can turn a great day out into a dangerous one.

Finally, make sure you bring plenty of snacks and drinks. Ski resorts tend to be fairly remote, and the nearest convenience store may be some distance away. Stock up on protein bars, water, and warm drinks for sustaining you on the lifts and breaks during the day. Having to constantly struggle with a can or a bottle can be inconvenient during an otherwise thrilling day, so investing in a good insulated water bottle is recommended. This will give you easy access to hydration whenever you need it.

Going on a ski holiday is a great way to unwind and have some fun. By following these tips, you can make sure you have a successful trip and are able to make the most of it without having to worry about being uncomfortable or unprepared. Happy skiing!
