What does Après-Ski mean?

Published 13 January 2023

Derived from a French term “après-ski” meaning “after skiing,” is the term for socialising and partying that takes place after skiing or other winter activities.

For experienced skiers and snowboarders, the après-ski scene is just as essential a part of the ski experience as the actual skiing. For others, the thought of après-ski may conjure up images of youths indulging in alcohol, toboggan races, and wild parties late into the night. However, après-ski is so much more than that; it's a way to strengthen community bonds, make new ones, and exchange stories of the day’s adventures.

The origins of après-ski go back hundreds of years in the weeks following religious holidays, when the people of the French Alps would finish their daily chores and socialise after a long day of working in the family farm or on the mountain. Originally, they would huddle around a fire and enjoy food and drinks; in many resorts this tradition is still kept alive by ski instructors, guides and the local community.

The modern form of après-ski has grown in popularity over time, as skiing has grown as an industry. Today, après-ski is an integral part of the overall ski experience, and is often the focus of the day rather than the skiing itself. After a hard day of hitting the slopes, hitting the après-ski bars, clubs and restaurants to relax, socialise and wind down adds that extra bit of excitement to the ski experience.

One of the most beloved aspects of après-ski is the ski-theme costumes. During après-ski, people dress in everything from funny après-ski costumes to full-on ski suits. This can help to create a sense of camaraderie and give everyone an extra boost of energy and enthusiasm to gear up for the next day—or even the next run.

For more than 400 years, après-ski has been an important part of the ski-mountain culture. Whether you're an experienced skier looking to relax with friends or a novice looking to make new ones, après-ski is one of the most enjoyable aspects of skiing. Whether you’re seeking to relax, have some drinks and dinner, or simply have a good time, après-ski can offer the perfect atmosphere. So go ahead, join in and make the most of your après-ski experience!
