What kind of ski boots, poles, and skis do I need?

Published 16 January 2023

When it comes to skiing, there are so many factors at play that can determine the type of boots, poles and skis that you need. From the terrain you’ll be skiing on, to your own personal skill level, every skier has unique needs when it comes to the type of equipment that will allow them to connect with the environment and the sport.

Ski boots are one of the most important pieces of equipment and must be chosen very carefully. A boot should not be too big or too small, as either can cause serious discomfort and foot fatigue. You should also consider the type and materials of the boot, depending on whether you are a recreational, all-mountain, or racing skier.

Ranging from leather, pliable plastic to hard-shell plastic, choose a comfortable pair that fits well and has the right stiffness for your skiing style.

The right ski poles are essential in keeping skiers in control and balanced. Length and grip type should be carefully considered, typically falling between your collarbone and nose in height. An adjustable pair is ideal for those who like to vary their style of skiing, while fixed-length poles can be tailored to your specifications. The material and flex of the pole will determine its weight and the feel on the mountain.

The last, but certainly not least, piece of skiing equipment you need is the skis themselves. Following the same logic as ski boots, the skis you select should be based on the type of terrain you’re skiing on, as well as what type of skier you are—all-mountain, freestyle, freeride, etc. The width, length, shape, and camber arc of the ski also impact how it glides on the snow.

Additionally, you should look into the material, weight and base of the ski - all of which could vary depending on the snow conditions you’re skiing on and your personal style.

It is very important to be aware of your ski or snowboard profile, as this will heavily influence the types of boots, poles, and skis that you need for a successful and comfortable run. Consider the type of terrain you’ll be skiing on, as well as your own personal abilities before purchasing your equipment.

Ultimately, comfortable, fitted, and well-crafted equipment will give you the confidence and control you need to reach the next level, regardless of the snow conditions or type of run. With the right ski boots, poles, and skis you can find joy, comfort, and a sense of power while skiing.
