Ski Resort Description

Hinterglemm

Together with Saalbach, Hinterglemm’s closely connected neighbour, and nearby Fieberbrunn, and Leogang, Hinterglemm forms one of Europe’s most exciting ski circuses. With 270km of excellent runs, this attractive village at the end of the Glemm Valley is a skiers dream.

Ideal for intermediate skiers, Hinterglemm has an impressive, modern lift network, which is easily accessible and very efficient. It is an ideal spot from which to begin your circuit of the valley. It’s also excellent for freestylers and snowboarders, the Hinterglemm terrain park is expansive.

The wide, snow sure nursery slops in Hinterglemm make this the best resort in the ski circus for complete beginners. And the wider area offers some excellent blue runs, perfect for those progressing onto the pistes.

On powder days Hinterglemm is renowned for its excellent off-piste, making it a fantastic destination for dedicated freeriders. Largely south-facing, the slopes of Hinterglemm are perfectly placed for capturing the sun and enjoying the absolutely outstanding scenery.

Hinterglemm is a more relaxed destination than Saalbach and has a family friendly atmosphere. The resort still knows how to party and the afternoons and après bars, such as the mountainside Goaßstall, can get very lively.

Alpin Card

The Alpin Card covers three regions on one pass, giving you access to 408km of premium slopes and 121 lifts. Alongside the Skicircus Saalbach Hinterglemm Leogang Fieberbrunn, you also get access to the Kitzsteinhorn in Kaprun and Schmittenhöhe in Zell am See

Accessing Zell am See's Ski Area

From 7th December 2019 a new modern lift included on the Alpin Card will connect the 270km ski area of Saalbach & Hinterglemm to the 138km ski area of Zell am See, including access to Zell am See’s 32km of black runs. To access this area ski down to the Zell connection lift and take the zellamsee Xpress gondola up Schmittenhöhe mountain. On return ski down to the middle station, then either take the prepared ski route to the bottom or take the zellamsee Xpress gondola. Once at the bottom it is a short 5 minute bus which runs every 20 minutes back to Saalbach.

Things to Do

Restaurants, food and drink

There are a wealth of restaurants across Saalbach and Hinterglemm and beyond. The majority of restaurants in Hinterglemm focus on traditional Austrian cuisine but you will also find Italian trattorias serving pizza and hotel restaurants serving burgers and steak.

When we’re on the mountain we head to the Bergstadl. At the mid station on the Westgipfelbahn and just off the piste, this traditional Austrian stube serves scrumptious regional cusine. Our favourite is the Wiener schnitzel.

We generally think of the goat themed Goaßstall as an après ski destination, but we have to admit that it has an incredible menu too. The platters are amazing, especially the Hoaße Goaß – a huge fillet steak.

Après, bars, clubs and nightlife

The quieter cousin of its livelier neighbour, Hinterglemm has a more relaxed après ski scene than Saalbach. Yet skiers and snowboarders that enjoy a good àpres scene are still well served and bars such as the rustic, thriving Goaßstall rank amongst the best in the Alps.

The popular and après award-winning Tanzhimmel is our favourite spot in the village to go dancing. This bar and disco is in the heart of the village and the outdoor area is just as great as it is inside.

Shopping

There are a handful of ski equipment and sports rental shops in the village centre as well as places selling local products and souvenirs. Visitors should not expect to find a large variety of shops but will not struggle to find basic supplies.

Spas and relaxation

There are many hotels offering incredible, state of the art spas and wellness facilities across Hinterglemm. Both the Gardenhotel Theresia and the Hotel Alpine Palace provide stunning indoor and outdoor pools. The heated pool at the Gardenhotel Theresia even uses specialist mineral water that soothes the skin.

Hotel Glemmtallerhof also has leisure area with an indoor pool, sauna, steam room and a gym. While Hinterglemm is a fantastic resort to combine a ski and spa holiday.

Arts, culture and events

The Saalbach and Hinterglemm area enjoys a good party and it’s therefore unsurprising that there is such a vibrant calendar of events taking place throughout the winter.

BERGFESTival kicks off the winter season in early December with two nights of “Rock and Rodeln”. Live music performances take place across the resort – both on and off the mountain.

In mid-December the Rave on Snow festival brings electronic music to the slopes of Saalbach and Hinterglemm. The festival, now over 20 years old, attracts big names from across the world of underground house and techno music.

Hinterglemm celebrates the end of the season in style with Dutchweek – a series of snow parties and skiing events, all with a Dutch twist. And the White pearl Mountain Days celebrates spring skiing with fine food and music.

Finally, it’s well worth heading over to Fieberbrunn for the Freeride World Tour. The event features the world’s best freeriding skiers and boarders tackling some of the most dramatic lines on the mountain. It’s an insane visual spectacle.

Non-skiers can participate in spectacular winter walking and try some excellent toboggan runs during their holiday. Inghams’ representatives can help you to arrange any off the slope activities that interest you. Here are a few of our favourites:

Night skiing

Hinterglemm is a great resort for enthusiastic night time skiers. Monday to Saturday the floodlit slopes and the freestyle Nightpark are open until 9.30 each evening and is accessible to anyone with a valid daytime ski pass.

Paragliding

Certainly one of our reps favourite non-ski activities to do in resort and it’s not hard to see why. This activity affords an opportunity to see amazing and unique views of the Austrian Alps while enjoying an exhilarating ride from the sky to the ground.

Tennis

Perhaps an unusual choice of activity for a winter sports holiday but the Saalbach Hinterglemm Sports Centre has excellent indoor tennis courts. Other fantastic facilities in the sports centre include a climbing tower and a natural ice rink where you can go ice skate or curling.

Tobogganing

The action packed toboggan ride is a classic winter activity, and Hinterglemm is a great resort for tobogganing. The Reiterkogel is one of the largest runs in the resort with over 3.5km of piste – it’s great fun for all the family.

Winter walking and snowshoeing

In Saalbach and Hinterglemm, there are around 140km of hiking trails to explore during the winter. Guided winter walks take place free of charge from January through to March and depart from the local tourist office. You can also download Maps of the local winter pathways.

Guided snowshoeing, and snowshoe equipment hire is available locally. Another traditional winter activity, it is a great way to explore the local winter wonderland.
