Ski Resort Description

Sestriere

Sitting at the very heart of The Milky Way ski area in Italy, Sestriere and nearby Borgata is the perfect home base for those of us who truly love the mountains. Whether you’re a complete beginner, or a seasoned expert, The Milky Way ski area truly has something for us all!

A purpose built resort that was constructed in the 1930s (and extended again in 2006 to host the Turin Winter Olympics) Sestriere has a modern and trendy feel to it, with a lively après ski crowd that congregates in the popular bars and pubs around the town when the lifts close.

Sestriere is also home to the Tabata night club, which claims to be one of the biggest and the best that the Alps has to offer!

Sitting amongst 400km of pistes, there is plenty of skiing and snowboarding to be had in Sestriere and beyond, joining the pistes over at Sauze d’Oulx, Claviere and Montgenèvre over the border in France.

Things to Do

Sestriere restaurants, food and drink

Sestriere offers a great selection of restaurants and bars from its ideal location at the centre of the Milky Way ski area. Predominantly Italian and Piedmont cuisine, this area is known for its wines and Prosecco, as well as cheese, meat and freshly made bread and pasta.

Pinky Bar on Piazza Fraiteve is a great little bar/ pizzeria where you can relax after a day of skiing or head to in the evening for a pleasant traditional Italian meal. For those staying in Borgata, there is Antica Spelonca where lovely local dishes are served. Last Tango is a another great restaurant to head to if you’re in pursuit of traditional Italian food and drink, and is located on Via La Gleisa (above Carabinieri Station).

Up on the mountain, the food is still excellent and a bit to eat with your après at Da Casse (Lou Brachettes) restaurant won’t go amiss- you can find it sitting just off Black 4, with great food and good music, an a la carte and snack menu. If you’re looking for a more traditional eating setting then IL Capret at the bottom of Blue 3 in Borgata has tasty cuisine with a multiple choice options and various selections daily.

Sestriere après, bars, clubs and nightlife

Sestriere is a lively location on the après front, since it is a popular resort for young people as well as old, from both near and afar! The party scene really picks up at the weekend when the local Italians from Turin come to ski.

There is no shortage of locally produced wine in the area, and there are a variety of bars and clubs to prop your ski boots up in at the end of the day, whether you’re looking for a traditional pub or a club that continues until the early hours of the morning. Prosecco, wine and Italian beers are popular in the area, but they also include imported varieties.

Pinky Bar sits on Piazza Fraiteve and is a fabulous restaurant. Bar Sestriere makes a good location if you are on a bar crawl through the town, and also plays sports on the TVs. Bar Kovo has some great exclusive deals for Inghams customers as well.

If you’re on the lookout for some night life then head to Tabata Night Club, one of the largest (if not THE largest) clubs in the Alps, open after 22:00 on Via Monterotto.

Sestriere shopping

The shops in Sestriere are amongst the usual expected stores, including sports and designer clothes, and equipment. These are mainly based around Piazza Fraiteve. There is a local market that takes place on Tuesday mornings outside Palazzetto dello Sport car park, which sells fresh fruit and vegetables.

Sestriere spas and relaxation

If you are looking for a spot of pampering, then you will be pleased to know that most 4-star hotels in Sestriere open their doors to the public to come and enjoy their spa facilities at a local price. Stay with Inghams at the Hotel Cristallo and you can enjoy the spa, gym, Turkish bath and sauna.

The local leisure centre, Palazzetto dello Sport also has a gym as well as a spa and wellness suite.

If you are not arranged to stay at a particular hotel, most things are bookable locally.

Sestriere arts, culture and events

The resort of Sestriere is modern, having been constructed in the 1930’s for the employees of the Fiat car workshops in Turin, and was extended again in 2006 to host to the Turin Winter Olympic Games. You can still visit some of the land marks and coast down the Alpine downhill courses.

Events across the Milky Way ski area are definitely worth exploring upon your arrival in resort, so speak with your Inghams rep to find out what’s happening during your stay.

If you wish to explore further afield to Turin, then you will find shops, galleries, museums (including the Egyptian museum) and more. It takes roughly 1.5 hours to get to Turin by car, and 2 hours by public transport.

Ice Skating - The Ice Park in Sestriere is fun for all levels and is a great alternative activity to skiing. Open 10am - 6pm (Times may differ on public holidays and Carnival) daily and costs approx €7 entrance and €6 skate hire. Prices and times are a guide from the Ice Park and may be subject to change, contact your rep in resort for latest information.
